SPIKE'S BOOKS

SPIKE BROWN

I love writing mysteries, but sometimes a different kind of story gets a hold of me and I can't shed it until it's on paper. Here are three stories I just had to write. One because of a tragic little known piece of history. One because I loved Oz books as a child. And one because at times I have a really weird sense of humor. Because these books are very different from my mysteries, I didn't want to confuse my readers. Thus "Spike" was born as my author alter ego.

ESCAPE TO MOLOKAI

The year, 1946.
The place, Maui.

Thirteen-year-old George Kahula’s carefree life is ruined when his best friend is arrested as a leper and deported to Kalaupapa. Now the authorities are looking for George. He runs from the police and sneaks home only to find his grandparents missing.
George realizes his only hope is to get to the neighboring island of Molokai and find his birth parents. But can he do it without drawing the attention of the authorities? It won’t be easy. He’s penniless, alone, and there’s no one he can trust. George’s determination to find a place where he belongs will change his life forever.

*** Who doesn't like an adventure?
George is more than a survivor when he loses everything. He is determined to locate his parents and will stop at nothing to find them. Against all odds he perseveres. The ending is not only satisfying, it is inspiring! I liked learning so much from this fictional story and the additional timeline and facts at the end of the book. I look forward to reading more books by Spike Brown.

He has to hide or he’ll be in big trouble with his parents and the clan. But when the monster tries to shoot an innocent rabbit, Arrth must act.
His brave deed backfires and the Bigfoot clan is in danger of discovery. Or worse, total destruction.
When it becomes clear that Arrth is the only one who can save the clan, he leaves the safety of Bigfoot Valley in the desperate hope of saving his kind.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ON AMAZON . . .

*** I liked all the technology that the Bigfoots have. It was fun thinking of them as having devices. I always pictured them more like bears or hairy monsters, so this changed my opinion. I also liked the place he lives in. There are cool caves and stuff. I also like when Arrth goes to the town. It's really funny how he reacts to people, cars . . .

Amazon review:
Did you ever wonder where L. Frank Baum, author of the Oz Series ever got and developed the original idea for the first book? ... Spike Brown took the first story, and took it backward, and was able to offer an intensely interesting and believable 'take' on how Mr. Baum got involved in the story, and was able to continue the stream of enchanting sequels to the first book.

All the initial characters are there, and the book is well enough written so it's like meeting old friends. This is one of those really great books for the whole family to read together. Everyone from child to adult will enjoy it. If you have been collecting the Oz series, you will want to add this book to your collection. It is a valuable and worthy addition to any Oz collection. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this series, and this type of book.
